20 Ways to Incorporate Technology into the Modern Language Classroom


Nowadays, technology can enrich the learning environment by using modern language classroom. The use of technology also helps all students to learn including the student with learning disabilities. This kind of approach suggests teacher to use universal design for learning (UDL) to plan instruction and technology integration for teaching in their modern language classroom.

The principles of UDL are to support learning by providing multiple, flexible method of presentation, expression and apprenticeship, and option for engagement. Besides, the power and benefit of technology in the modern language classroom is to make learning a foreign language possible for student who previously excluded. Technology also opens the door to students with diverse needs because it allows access to the curriculum as well as information about language nd culture. It also helps teachers and students to meet the standards of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities.

Unfortunately, there is a lack of the impact of specific technology tools or applications on the performance of high school students with learning abilities. It is about the rapid growth of new technology, particularly in internet and expansion of open sources materials. By the time studies are conducted and data are collected, analyzed and published, the technology often is outdated or replaced by new version. 

For that reason, teacher should view educational technologies as compensatory support for student in content areas. For those, there are 20 suggestions to provide students with varying needs with equal access to modern language.

  1. Begin with the basics-they are always in style
Let the student get used to the media such as audio media, VCD, DVD player, and computer to develop their listening and speaking skill.
  1. Blog
Blog allows the student to become aware to their learning process. They can use blog to fulfill their assignment digitally, to build relationship to the world outside of the classroom.
  1. Find pen pals
To investigate cultural differences, the way is to interact with the native speaker. The forum is open to compare and contrast the culture differences. Students and teachers can find pen pals at www.mylanguageexchange.com.
  1. Contribute to wiki
To contribute the information sharing, students and teachers can use wiki. It helps the teachers and students to compile their knowledge.
  1. Use web quest for news and cultural trends
Web quest allows access to up-to-date info. It also give students more focus than when they simply go online and try to find information themselves.
  1. Take your students an a virtual trip
Ask the students to browse the information in the internet by providing a guidance to follow.
  1. Create a budget using a spreadsheet program
Students are able to plan an activity such as in math and economics. They can use spreadsheets such as excel to organize and do calculation and etc.
  1. Incorporate science
Technology can be used to get information about the world. Google maps and Google earth are two programs that can make geography come alive for student and show relationship of time and space between people and places.
  1. Use software to assist with writing assignment
Teacher can use WordQ to help the student to do writing assignment. WordQ program provides spelling and word correction.
  1. Use web 2.0
The free-open access program found on the Web can enhance students' learning experience and are invaluable resources for teacher. Web 2.0 program is helping student to make connection with the world, sharing information, and able to access the information for over the world.
  1. Minimize the digital divide
Using Google docs and spreadsheet are helping students and teachers to work online and no need to open many programs.
  1. Use a desktop publishing program
Teachers can teach technology skill by using publishing program such as newsletter, create brochure, or design website to combine the theory and the practice.
  1. Create a digital story with presentation
Students are able to develop a story not only on written but also in digital story such as presentation, video. This kind of activity strengthens the visual rather than verbal.
  1. Use screen-reading programs
Commercial screen readers can teach the student about the sound of a language and how the words are spelled.
  1. Create graphic organizers
Graphic organizers helps the student to organize their though and teach them how to take notes.
  1. Use digital media
Using camera, handycam are helping the student to create project, books, or presentation. They can use the digital media to demonstrate their skill or perform a movie, commercial video, and etc.
  1. Use story starters
Digital story is able to help the students develop vocabulary, fluency, and allow to work in peer  group. The form of digital story can be in written form, digital pictures, auditory, and so forth.
  1. Use recording devices
Students can record presentations and exercises on recordable photo, album at home and can include written work, illustration or photos. This modification allows the teacher to monitor progress and record correction, and it allows the students the students to develop his or her ability to produce language as well as confidence in that ability without the pressure of performing for audience.
  1. Podcast
To improve listening comprehension skill, podcast can be used to launch the direction of project in target language. Lectures can be recorded; stories, books, or radio programs that are culturally relevant can be podcast.
  1. Use games
Provide toys and game from another culture to teach lesson about cultural and universal values. The games can be vary depends on the students' need.
